• ITI Turner Lathe Machine Setup & Operation

  Job Description

  Duties:

  Set up and operate conventional lathe machines for turning, facing, grooving, threading (metric/inch), knurling, boring, and taper turning operations.

  Read and interpret 2D mechanical drawings, process route sheets, operational sketches, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) specifications.

  Select, mount, and grind cutting tools (HSS and carbide inserts), ensuring proper tool geometry, rake angles, and relief angles for different materials.

  Inspect workpieces during and after machining using precision measuring instruments such as vernier calipers, outside/inside micrometers, bore gauges, and thread pitch gauges.

  Perform routine preventive maintenance on lathe machines, including oiling, greasing, chip clearing, coolant replenishment, and belt tension adjustments.

  Maintain strict adherence to shop-floor safety guidelines, personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols, and 5S workplace management standards.

  Identify component defects, material flaws, or machining deviations and report issues promptly to the toolroom supervisor or quality team

   

  Focus Skills:

  Strong practical skills in manual lathe setup, tool grinding, chucking, steady-rest setup, and precision turning techniques.

  Proficiency in reading technical blueprints, engineering drawings, and standard measuring gauges.

  Hands-on expertise in thread cutting (internal/external), taper turning, and precision boring on conventional lathes.

  Good understanding of material properties, cutting speeds, feed rates, and coolant selection for various metals (mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass).

  Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and physical stamina for shop-floor shift operations.
