• Tool Maker for Preventive Tool Maintenance

  Job Description

  The Tool Maker in Injection Moulding is responsible for fabricating, assembling, modifying, repairing, and maintaining high-precision injection moulds, core/cavity inserts, dies, and tooling fixtures. Working directly from 2D engineering drawings and 3D CAD/CAM models, this role ensures tool dimensional precision, optimal moulding performance, and minimal downtime by diagnosing tool wear, executing preventative tool maintenance, and conducting precision polishing/fitting.

   

  Responsibilities:

  Assemble, disassemble, fit, and align high-precision multi-cavity injection moulds, hot runner systems, sliding cores, lifters, and ejector mechanisms.

  Operate manual and conventional toolroom machinery including surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, milling machines, lathes, radial drills, and EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) equipment.

  Execute scheduled preventative tool maintenance, thorough mould cleaning, core/cavity polishing, vent cleaning, and seal replacements.

  Diagnose and repair mould breakdowns, flash issues, tool damage, wall thickness variations, and parting-line wear on the shop floor.

  Perform precision benchwork, blue-matching, hand-fitting, spot grinding, and surface finishing to strict micro-level tolerances.

  Collaborate with moulding engineers and setters during initial tool trials (T0/T1) to identify defects, optimize cooling line performance, and carry out necessary tool modifications.

  Maintain comprehensive tool history logs, tool maintenance checklists, and spare parts inventories for cores, cavity pins, ejector pins, and copper electrodes

   

  Skills:

  In-depth technical knowledge of injection mold manufacturing, hot runner systems, side actions, unscrewing mechanisms, and mold cooling circuits.

  Advanced practical skills in operating hand-held machine tools (grinders, milling machines, lathes, wire/EDM grinders) and using precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, machinist's microscopes). 

  Ability to interpret 2D/3D engineering drawings, GD&T specifications, mold layout drawings, and tool steel specifications.

  Skills include manual metal processing, mirror polishing, parting line selection, and defect removal using microwelding/laser welding. 

  Knowledge of plastic injection molding defects (burrs, short protrusions, dents, deformations) and their immediate causes.
