Job Description
The main "Vertical Machining Setup Engine, Work Holding Specialist, Tool Calibration Anchor & First-Off Milling Precision Guardian" for our manufacturing and machining operations is the VMC Setter in Manufacturing Vertical Machining Center Setup, Work Offset Calibration, Fixture Mounting, Tooling Presetting & Manufacturing Analytics Specialist. Your main responsibility is to prepare, set up, calibrate, and prove out 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis Vertical Machining Centers (VMC) for active production runs, while operations directors, manufacturing managers, and CNC/VMC programmers create production schedules, toolpath strategies, program G-codes, and quality guidelines.
Responsibilities:
Work-holding fixtures, hydraulic/pneumatic vises, magnetic chucks, and rotary tables should be mounted, aligned, dial-in, and secured into VMC machine tables in accordance with setup sheet specifications and datum origin points.
Cutting Tool Assembly & Height Calibration: Put milling cutters, end mills, face mills, drills, taps, and reamers into the proper tool holders; use height gauges, optical tool presetters, or automated touch probes to measure and adjust tool diameter and length offsets.
Program Loading & Work Offset Setting: Use edge finders, dial test indicators, or 3D touch probes to set up work coordinate systems after loading G-Code/M-Code programs into VMC machine controllers.
First-Piece Prove-Out & Trial Run Execution: To ensure tool clearance, check fixture clearance, avoid collisions, and generate the first first-off test component, execute the program safely using single-block mode, dry runs, and decreased feed overrides.
Skills:
VMC Machine Setup & Mechanical Calibration Mastery: Practical knowledge in assembling 3-, 4-, or 5-axis Vertical Machining Centers (VMC), including rotary axis zeroing, fixture tramming, vice alignment, and jaw boring.
Tooling Assembly & Touch Probe Operations: Proficiency in selecting tool holders, torqueing collets, operating tool presetters, and using automated touch probes (Renishaw/Blum) for measuring tool length and diameter and work offsets.
G-Code Verification & Controller Operation: Strong grasp of G-code/M-code structures, block deletion, single block execution, feed/spindle override management, and manual program editing at the controller.
Precision Metrology & GD&T Blueprint Reading: The ability to use precision metrology tools, decipher Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) symbols, and read complex mechanical drawings.
