  Job Description

  The Metallurgy Lab Incharge is responsible for managing the metallurgical testing laboratory, overseeing material characterization, heat treatment validation, and failure analysis for metal components, mold inserts, and tooling steels used in injection molding operations. Serving as the primary technical authority on material integrity, this role ensures tool steels and metal-molded/inserted components meet strict metallurgical, hardness, microstructural, and wear-resistance specifications

   

  Responsibilities

  Oversee day-to-day operations of the metallurgy and material testing lab, ensuring compliance with ISO/IEC testing and calibration standards.

  Conduct microstructural analysis, grain size determination, phase identification, and inclusion rating using optical microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

  Perform hardness testing (Rockwell, Vickers, Brinell) and micro-hardness profiling on hardened mold cores, cavity inserts, and mechanical wear components.

  Lead root-cause failure analysis (RCFA) on broken or cracked tooling, ejector pins, mold plates, and fatigue-damaged inserts using fractography and metallographic techniques.

  Validate external and internal heat treatment processes (vacuum hardening, nitriding, stress relieving, tempering) through micro-hardness traverse and case-depth evaluation.

  Conduct incoming raw material inspection for tool steels and alloy stock, verifying chemical composition via Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) or XRF analyzers against mill test certificates.

  Maintain testing equipment calibration, manage chemical/reagent safety, and maintain complete documentation for client audits and material traceabilities

   

  Skills:

  In-depth technical knowledge of physical/mining metallurgy, tool steel metallurgy, phase transformations, and heat treatment cycles.

  Practical skills in metallographic sample preparation (mounting, grinding, polishing, etching) and optical/electron microscopy

  Expertise in operating hardness testers (HRC, HV, HB), chemical analyzers (OES/XRF), and non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment.

  Strong capability in failure analysis, fractography, defect identification (e.g., inclusions, segregation, micro-cracks, thermal fatigue), and technical report writing.

  Familiarity with international testing standards (ASTM, ISO, DIN, JIS) for metals and tool steels
