Job Description
The primary "Metallurgical Testing Lead, Microstructure & Failure Analysis Specialist, Raw Material Quality Guardian, Heat Treatment Validation Lead & Material Quality Integration Specialist" in the Quality Department throughout our manufacturing operations is the Metallurgy Lab Incharge Quality Department Metallurgical Testing, Material Characterisation, Microstructure Analysis, Heat Treatment Quality & Metallurgical Analytics Specialist. Your main responsibility is to oversee, run, and manage the metallurgy and material testing laboratory while Quality Heads, Plant Directors, Chief Metallurgists, and Operations Leads set overall plant quality policies, ISO/IATF quality frameworks, material selection standards, and annual capital budgets.
Responsibilities
Execution of Metallurgical and Metallographic Testing: Oversee daily metallurgical testing, which includes core/surface microstructure validation, phase volume fraction calculation, inclusion rating (ASTM E45), microstructural evaluation, and grain size measurement (ASTM E112).
Tensile, yield, elongation, impact testing (Charpy/Izod), and hardness testing procedures (Rockwell, Vickers micro-hardness, Brinell) for raw materials, castings, forged parts, and heat-treated components are all under your supervision.
Heat Treatment Quality Validation: To guarantee tight conformity to engineering drawings and client specifications, examine and validate heat-treated batches (effective case depth, or ECD, total case depth, decarburisation depth, core hardness, and martensite/austenite phase structures).
Inspection and Chemical Analysis of Raw Materials: Verify arriving raw materials using spectrometry/OES chemical analysis, carbon/sulfur determination, ultrasonic flaw detection, macro-etching, and provide material test certificates (MTC) verification reports.
Skills:
Materials & Metallurgical Engineering Mastery of Characterisation: Thorough understanding of phase diagrams, heat treatment metallurgy, metallographic sample preparation, microstructural interpretation, and ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy.
Mechanical Testing & Metrology Instruments: Practical experience using optical microscopes, image analysers, Charpy impact testers, Universal Testing Machines (UTM), Rockwell/Brinell hardness testers, micro-Vickers hardness testers, and optical emission spectrometers (OES).
Complete knowledge of international metallurgical standards, such as those for grain size, inclusion rating, hardness testing, case depth measurement, and non-destructive testing, as well as ASTM, ISO, DIN, SAE, and BIS standards.
Failure Analysis & Quality Root Cause Methods: sophisticated capacity to detect material flaws, fracture modes, and employ 8D and 5-Why problem-solving frameworks to stop component failures.
